What To Do About This Kentucky Republican’s Diabolical Abortion Bill

A few weeks ago, Kentucky Republican Senator Ken Fleming filed a bill to expand abortion in the state. HB 711 would allow the murder of preborn children before six weeks in the case of rape and incest, and in the case of “a lethal fetal anomaly.”

That was a mistake. Here’s why, and what to do about it.

Murder Is Murder

No matter the situation that leads to a pregnancy, and no matter the state of the child’s health, the command remains: “You shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13). There are no exceptions to this command, so there must be no exceptions to our opposition to abortion, which is murder.

Rape and incest are wicked and tragic, but they are no reason to murder. There is never a good reason to murder, since murder is by definition the unjust killing of a human. Two wrongs don’t make a right. The Bible and modern science agree that human life begins at conception (fertilization), which means abortion is always murder and is therefore never justified.

The Mother

The woman who is pregnant by rape or incest deserves the full support of her community, and she deserves justice. The one who violated her should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The Rapist

Biblically, a rapist should be subject to the death penalty (Deuteronomy 22:25). He deserves to die, but the child he fathered does not. As the Bible also says, “The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father” (Ezekiel 18:20).

The Child

For the preborn human who is a product of incest or is found to have a lethal fetal anomaly, we must not play God by trying to get ahead of Him, killing the child before his or her natural death. Who do we think we are?

Consider that God performs miracles—as in this verifiable case in which a child with confirmed spina bifida was born completely healed. Who are we to determine who God will not heal, and to snuff out their lives before healing has a chance?

Even if this were not a miracle, and the doctors simply got it wrong and the child was always healthy, imagine if the mother had had an abortion (as she almost did) based on a false report! Yes, doctors sometimes get things wrong. How arrogant are we to think we know what God has ordained for someone’s life or death, and then on that basis to violate His command against murder!

Iniquitous Decrees

For these reasons, any provisions to allow abortions in any case are wicked and senseless—what the Bible calls “iniquitous decrees” in Isaiah 10:

“Woe to those who decree iniquitous decrees, and the writers who keep writing oppression, to turn aside the needy from justice and to rob the poor of my people of their right, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey!” (Isaiah 10:1–2)

HB 711 attempts to turn aside the needy from justice and to make the fatherless into prey. Who is more needy than a child conceived in incest, or a child who has a lethal fetal anomaly? Who is more fatherless than the child of a rapist? The representatives who filed this bill are writers who write oppression. The next two verses say to them:

“What will you do on the day of punishment, in the ruin that will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help, and where will you leave your wealth? Nothing remains but to crouch among the prisoners or fall among the slain. For all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.” (Isaiah 10:3–4)

If this bill were to pass, anyone who supported it will have blood on their hands, for which they will answer to God on the Day of Judgment. Even if it doesn’t pass, they will answer for the fact that they supported it.

Take Action

Please, be a champion for the lives of your fellow human beings, who were made in the image of God just like you, by opposing HB 711 with your every effort. At this moment, that means at the very least contacting the leaders of the Kentucky House’s Committee on Committees to urge them to not let HB 711 see the light of day. Secondarily, contact the sponsors of the bill and urge them to change their minds. Lastly, post about this on social media, tell your friends about it, and share your opinion about it with other legislators. If it helps, include the link to this article in any one of those actions.

For the lives of these children, the good of these mothers, and the souls of these representatives, voice your opposition to this diabolical bill.

God says, “I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life” (Deuteronomy 30:19). Choosing life means rejecting HB 711. Haven’t we as a people brought enough judgment on ourselves as it is?

UPDATE: I have it on good authority that the bill is “dead” due to not enough support. Thank God. Please pray for the legislators who sponsored this bill, that God would give them discerning minds to know that this kind of policy is an outrageous injustice in His eyes. May He grant them repentance, and the ability to trust His commands over their own thoughts.
